“No one cares how much weight you can lift if you can’t touch your toes.”
That’s what a fellow trainer said to me when I opted out of stretching after a heavy lift day. I laughed it off at the moment, but his words are something that stuck with me. This concept was foreign during my novice years. I was taught to lift heavy, work hard, and go to muscle failure during every workout. My only reference concerning recovery at the time was a protein shake. It wasn’t until later in my career when I began to realize the power of recovery and how it can take you to that next level.
Working hard in the gym has a ton of benefits, but it didn’t give me any relief from a former back injury I suffered that resulted in bruised ribs and a punctured lung. In fact, it often made the pain and stiffness worse. Techniques like stretching, foam rolling, massages, and cold therapy are what allowed me to continue to exercise pain free. Recovering to get to that next level is all about flexibility, mobility, longevity, and overall quality of life. A wise man and the inventor of pilates once said,
“You’re only as old as your spine is flexible.”
